Since retiring as an Arena Football player Coach Blackshear has amassed an impressive pedigree as a football coach. He has held multiple roles as a Wide Receivers Coach, Defensive Backs Coach, Offensive Coordinator and as a Head Coach. His experience spans High School (Lubbock Trinity Christian, Jersey Village High School and Fort Worth Harvest Christian), College (Texas Tech, Texas State, University of Houston and Texas College) and includes 12 years of coaching with a number of teams in the Arena Football leagues. He has worked with start-up programs as well as in well-established professional organizations. The one common thread you’ll find is that wherever he has coached he has a reputation for elevating the level of play.
A High School standout at Houston Reagan, Rodney Blackshear was recruited to play wide receiver at Texas Tech University. In both his Junior and Senior seasons he led the Red Raiders in receiving. His accolades in college included his selection as the Team MVP and in his receiving the Team Leadership award. He is a two-time ALL Southwest Conference team member and was selected as a 3rd Team Pre-season All American in his Senior year. In honor of his stellar career as a Red Raider he was inducted into the Texas Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
Coach Blackshear signed a free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins in 1992 and also played seven seasons in the Arena Football League as a Wide Receiver/Defensive Back. He was selected to the All-Arena First Team in 1998 and ended his AFL career with the 2001 Arena Bowl Champions – The Grand Rapids Rampage. In 2014 he was inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.
